theUNKNOWN-pt.2

by GRAMPS

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

The limited edition new album all with hand printed (individually stencilled and stamped) covers made from recycled cardboard. Luck of the draw which colour combo you get…some super-limited yellow G'S left...

theUNKNOWN-pt.2 is a NEW RECORDING of the remaining GRAMPS songs that fell into the void after they won Triple J's Unearthed and then disbanded at the end of 1998.

What started as a merry idea to re-record these songs over a December weekend turned into a reality in 2011, as the band began recording demos and pushing towards actually making it happen 13 years later.

Bassist Joel Coxall, Songwriter/Guitarist David Gibb & Drummer Jordan Lockett got together in a Port Fairy dairy to blast out some of the old songs onto tape, while Songwriter/Guitarist Gus Franklin threw together demos of the other songs during soundcheck on a European tour with the band, Architecture in Helsinki.

The band then convened in a lonely beach house in Port Fairy, enlisting a helping hand (and caravan) from local producer and studio owner Chris Hedges to re-capture the raw edge of their long-lost teenage riffs.

The album is a ball-tearing romp through 7 of the bands' un-recorded live classics from back in the day, featuring songs like the shoegazing anti-rape song, "When," to expletive-filled accounts of the bands' trip to Sydney to re-record their song for Triple J "Airport Nazi's" and "Trippin' Truckie," a riff-heavy folk tale about long-haul truck driving in Australia.

COW OVERBOARD (Gibb/Edwards/Gramps) Sailin' on a spanish ship, Destination Unknown... The prisoners were given' sh%t, they walked the plank alone… The food was scarce the food was short, only one cow left for us… I say, "F@#k the prisoners!" this cow's coming with us… There he goes! OVERBOARD! For 40 days and 40 nights, we sailed the 7 seas… The horns of Noah's friesian rule, had filled this arc with fleas... A mutiny was inevitable, a new captain WILL rise… Scrub the deck & cut his neck, And bleed him of his lies! There he goes! OVERBOARD! The 3 of us were left, 2 of us were friends… We decided to draw straws, to see who would end… The hunger & the famine, that we had to endure… The hardest thing i had to do, was eat my best friend RAW! OVERBOARD! There he goes!

J.A.P.S 03:11
Let's add another song to the list (to the list) I think we'll finish it when we're pissed (when we're pissed) While he sucks another one down (another one down) Blows it out, inspiration is found Inspiration's hard to find, in this world of yours and mine, Heading back in time, slipping' through whatever cracks we can find, HEY! Let's slam some heads into the wall (aggression is here) Words are hard to find from the soul (tryin' too hard) Roll a doobie or have a mix (kickin' back) Out of this world that does the trick! Inspiration's hard to find, in this world of yours and mine, Heading back in time, slipping' through whatever cracks we can find, HEY! Words don't come so easy all the time, Change a riff, add a lick, the words don't rhyme Getting frustrated….F@#K! Put it down, come back to it another time. I don't know what i should do now, Who can tell me what to do now, The world is moving in the wrong way for me, Who can see the terror that faces me, In the future or in the past, In my knowledge things never last, You will wait and you will see, The fire & fuel that's inside of me. Fire & Fuel that's inside of me x8

WHEN 04:10
I see you on the inside, I'm out here looking in, These double-sided windows, For me are just too thin. But you don't look so good out here, And i can't feel that whole You don't know what you are doing So don't say that i'm cold. I take comfort from a baby, And hide in photographs, You take pot shots at a lady, And then rape her just for laughs But you don't feel so good inside, And i can't ever fill that hole, You know exactly what you're doing So you can't say i've got no soul. Do you like it when? And out of it? Are you overbored? Do you like it then? Do you like it when? Do you like it then? do fall back down? do you crawl around and pick yourself up now, now?

JOBE 04:40
I see you on top of them all, Are you a part of the call or the only one, I think i might be going to slink out on everyone, So i'll see you at the back of the hall, didn't even have the courage to call, I'll have to shed my nerve just to talk to you at all. But i'll be around, to tell when you're down, Think of everything to pull you 'round, And i hope i'm the one to hold you. Jane you're so far away, I so much wanna say, but they say that you're weird anyway. See you on top of them all, Are you a part of the call or the only one, I think i'm going to slink out on everyone, So i see you almost everyday, in the kitchen of my daydream play, I'll have to get to know you before i can really say, That i'll be around, to tell when you're down, Think of everything to pull you 'round, But i won't be the one to hold you. Jane you're so far away, I so much wanna say, But they say that you're weird anyway.

GRAMPS Port Fairy, Australia

GRAMPS started in a shed in Port Fairy circa 1995, and progressed to a self-funded album recorded locally in 1998, which gave birth to a wealth of local classics, including 'Glitter-Eyed Girl,' which won Triple J's Unearthed competition for the Warrnambool region. The group disbanded in 99 to pursue other commitments, but are now back 13 years later with their remaining 90s songs on a new record. ... more
