theUNKNOWN-pt.2 is a NEW RECORDING of the remaining GRAMPS songs that fell into the void after they won Triple J's Unearthed and then disbanded at the end of 1998.
What started as a merry idea to re-record these songs over a December weekend turned into a reality in 2011, as the band began recording demos and pushing towards actually making it happen 13 years later.
Bassist Joel Coxall, Songwriter/Guitarist David Gibb & Drummer Jordan Lockett got together in a Port Fairy dairy to blast out some of the old songs onto tape, while Songwriter/Guitarist Gus Franklin threw together demos of the other songs during soundcheck on a European tour with the band, Architecture in Helsinki.
The band then convened in a lonely beach house in Port Fairy, enlisting a helping hand (and caravan) from local producer and studio owner Chris Hedges to re-capture the raw edge of their long-lost teenage riffs.
The album is a ball-tearing romp through 7 of the bands' un-recorded live classics from back in the day, featuring songs like the shoegazing anti-rape song, "When," to expletive-filled accounts of the bands' trip to Sydney to re-record their song for Triple J "Airport Nazi's" and "Trippin' Truckie," a riff-heavy folk tale about long-haul truck driving in Australia.

I ride my bike in the sun,
I ride my bike in the rain,
I drive my Mack Truck around,
Until the night turns to day,
I got a beergut!
Bonds' singlet too, but,
I got a strange affliction, got an ecstasy addiction,
I see some fierce kangaroos, A guy named Old Man Emu,
Here in my humble abode, take a trip then hit the road,
The girls on the bonnet wave their hands in the air,
Disco-Party fever's not uncommon here, cos i'm a….
TRIPPIN' TRUCKIE, NOT A JUNKIE, TRIPPIN' TRUCKIE
Stop in the roadhouse at 8, fried eggs, juice & beefsteak,
hitchhiker says, "hey man, i'll get a ride if i can,"
Up here throwin' tabs in the cab, I start thinkin' 'bout rehab,
No freak out, this isn't snow…just dust in lights here we go,
Those girls on the bonnet, they're all startin' to stare,
Cover my eyes with my hands cos i, can't stand the glare, yes i'm a…
TRIPPIN' TRUCKIE, NOT A JUNKIE, TRIPPIN' TRUCKIE
I like my duck-billed sneakers, those boyhood fairy creepers,
VOLTRON, Mask & G.I.JOE, playin' on the dashboard, "hello,"
I like my false fill x2, I like my horse pills x2
GRAMPS started in a shed in Port Fairy circa 1995, and progressed to a self-funded album recorded locally in 1998, which
gave birth to a wealth of local classics, including 'Glitter-Eyed Girl,' which won Triple J's Unearthed competition for the Warrnambool region. The group disbanded in 99 to pursue other commitments, but are now back 13 years later with their remaining 90s songs on a new record....more
